You have a Google Business Profile. Most businesses do. But having one and having one that actually works are two different things. These 7 mistakes are the most common reasons a GBP sits in position 9 instead of the top 3 — and most of them can be fixed in an afternoon.

Why Your GBP Matters More Than Your Website

For most local service searches, the Google Map Pack receives more clicks than all organic results combined. Someone searching “locksmith near me” at 9pm isn’t scrolling past the 3-pack to find your website. They’re calling the first number they see. If you’re not in those 3 positions, you don’t exist to them.

Your GBP is the single highest-leverage thing you control in local search. These mistakes are why most GBPs underperform — even when the business is genuinely better than competitors who outrank them.

Mistake #1: Choosing the Wrong Primary Category

What it is: Your primary category is the single most important setting in your entire Google Business Profile. It tells Google exactly what you do. There are over 4,000 categories available — and most businesses choose one that’s too broad.

Why it kills rankings: If you’re a window cleaner but you’ve selected “Cleaning Service” as your primary category, you’re competing against house cleaners, office cleaners, and carpet cleaners. Google doesn’t know to prioritize you for window cleaning searches.

The fix: Go to your GBP dashboard → Edit Profile → Business Category. Search for the most specific category that describes your core service. “Window Cleaning Service” beats “Cleaning Service” every time. Add up to 9 secondary categories for all other services you offer.

Mistake #2: Ignoring the Q&A Section

What it is: The Q&A section on your GBP lets anyone ask a question about your business — and anyone can answer. Including random members of the public, who may answer incorrectly.

Why it kills rankings: Unanswered Q&As are a missed opportunity and a trust risk. Google uses the text in Q&As for keyword relevance. Unanswered Q&As signal an inactive, unengaged business.

The fix: Answer every existing question. Then proactively add your own — the FAQs you wish customers would ask. “Do you offer same-day service?”, “Are you insured?”, “What areas do you cover?” Include your keywords naturally in the answers.

Mistake #3: Inconsistent or Incorrect Business Hours

What it is: Your GBP shows hours that don’t match reality — outdated holiday hours, hours that contradict your website, or simply wrong information.

Why it kills rankings: If your hours conflict with what Google finds on your website or directories, it creates a trust signal conflict that depresses rankings. Wrong hours also lead to bad reviews when customers show up and find you closed.

The fix: Check your GBP hours against your actual operating hours and your website right now. Make them match exactly. Set special hours for federal holidays in advance — Google rewards businesses that proactively manage this.

💡 At Axiom Digital, we’ve never audited a US local business GBP that was actively suppressed and didn’t have at least 3 of these 7 mistakes. Usually it’s 4 or 5. The good news: most of them are fixed in an afternoon.

Mistake #4: No Posts in 30+ Days

What it is: GBP Posts are essentially social media posts that appear directly on your Google listing. Many businesses create their GBP, never post on it, and wonder why competitors outrank them.

Why it kills rankings: Post frequency is a direct activity signal to Google. A GBP that hasn’t been updated in months signals the opposite of operational. Competitors who post weekly consistently outrank those who don’t — even with fewer reviews.

The fix: Post at least once per week. A before-and-after photo of a recent job. A seasonal offer. A useful tip. Use relevant keywords naturally in the post text. Set a recurring reminder: every Monday morning, post one thing.

Mistake #5: Photos That Hurt More Than Help

What it is: Either no photos, or low-quality photos — blurry, dark, poorly framed, or completely irrelevant stock images uploaded by a web designer who set up the account.

Why it kills rankings: Photo quantity is a ranking signal. Businesses with 100+ photos outrank those with 10, all else being equal. Poor quality photos also reduce conversion — a potential customer comparing two plumbers will call the one whose photos show clean work environments and professional equipment.

The fix: Add a minimum of 50 photos. Include exterior shots, team photos, work in progress, before/after results, and equipment. Use your phone — modern smartphones take excellent photos. Add 5 new photos every month.

Mistake #6: Not Responding to Reviews

What it is: Ignoring reviews — positive and negative — instead of responding to every single one.

Why it kills rankings: Google explicitly states that responding to reviews improves your local ranking. Not responding to negative reviews is actively damaging — potential customers see the silence and interpret it as indifference.

The fix: Respond to every review within 48 hours. For positive reviews: thank them specifically and mention the job type or location. For negative reviews: be professional, acknowledge the issue, and take the conversation offline. Never argue in public.

Mistake #7: Service Area Confusion

What it is: Either not setting a service area at all, setting it too broadly, or setting it in a way that conflicts with your address settings.

Why it kills rankings: If you set your service area as the entire country but your address is in Chicago, Google doesn’t know which searches you’re most relevant for. Overly broad service areas reduce your relevance for local searches.

The fix: Set your service area to the specific cities, towns, and regions you actually serve. List individual towns and boroughs — not just your state or metro area. Create individual location pages on your website for your top service areas to reinforce your relevance signal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from local business owners about Google Business Profile optimization and rankings.

Choosing the wrong primary GBP category is the single most common and most damaging mistake. Your primary category tells Google exactly what your business does. If it is too broad, too generic, or simply incorrect, Google cannot rank you for the searches that matter most. A plumber who selects “Contractor” instead of “Plumber” is competing against every trade in that broad category — and losing visibility for the specific searches that drive real calls.

The most likely causes are: wrong primary category, keyword stuffing in your business name, an unverified or suspended profile, NAP inconsistency across directories, duplicate listings, or GBP suppression. Check each of these in order — most can be diagnosed and fixed within an afternoon. See our full guide on GBP suppression for a step-by-step fix.

Yes — and the effect is more significant than most business owners realize. Google Posts signal profile activity to the local ranking algorithm. Profiles with no posts in the last 30 days are treated as less active and ranked lower. Posting at minimum once per week reinforces your relevance for target searches. The content matters less than the consistency — even a simple before-and-after photo with a two-sentence caption maintains the activity signal.

Review count, star rating, review velocity, and review response rate all influence Google Maps rankings. A business receiving 5 reviews per month consistently outranks one that received 50 reviews in a single push and then nothing for a year. See our complete review strategy guide for the full system.

Yes. Adding keywords to your business name that are not part of your actual registered business name violates Google’s guidelines and can result in profile suspension. “Mike’s Plumbing” is compliant. “Mike’s Plumbing — Emergency Plumber Dallas Same Day Service” will get your profile flagged. If you see competitors doing this and outranking you, report them through the GBP flag function.

Aim for a minimum of 50 photos to start, with 5 new photos added every month. Businesses with 100+ photos consistently outperform those with 10 or fewer in the Map Pack. Photos should show your actual work, team, vehicle or equipment, and completed projects. Never use stock images — Google can detect them and they reduce engagement signals.

Duplicate listings split your ranking signals between two profiles, confuse Google about which listing to show, and can result in both listings being suppressed simultaneously. Claim the duplicate if possible — then request removal. Never leave an unclaimed duplicate sitting there. Even an inactive duplicate pulls ranking authority away from your main profile.
